It’s Valentine’s month!
We are going to showcase several of our client couples that come in regularly together or separately to B-Fit to get their workouts done. As you read through these spotlights, we are sharing the benefits of spouses and couples both being on the same page having priorities of better health and fitness.
And Valentine’s month is all about the heart! Candy hearts, hearts filled with chocolate, cards with hearts on them but what about your own heart?

Are you taking care of your heart health? This is a great time to evaluate if you are taking care of one of your most important organs. Here are some statistics for how hard your heart works for you.

  • During the course of an average lifetime, your heart may beat more than two and a half billion times.
  • The average heart beats per minute is 72, with an average lifespan today–75 years, your heart beats 4,320 times per hour, 103,680 times a day, 37,843,200 times a year, and 2,838,240,000 times a lifetime on average.
That is a lot of work for our hearts, and this all happens without us consciously even having to think about what our heart is doing.

These are some tips that can help keep your heart in better shape:
1. Stay hydrated – drink a minimum of 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight every day.
2. Find ways to reduce your stress levels- there are some simple things that can help with this – diaphragmatic breathing, walking or moving 30 minutes every day, turn the news off and turn on some favorite or relaxing music.
3. Give to others, “research has shown that giving social support to others helps lower blood pressure, and people that give time to help others through community and organization involvement have less depression and lower stress levels.”
4. Get enough sleep. Most people need around 8 hours of sleep a night. When you sleep it allows for healing and less work for your organs, basically, it allows for downtime for your organs.
5. And watch your caffeine intake especially if you know that caffeine bothers you or causes you not to sleep at night.

So, Happy Valentine’s month to everyone. Enjoy our spotlight and make sure you are taking care of your own heart!
