When Shawn first started at B-Fit he had come in with some lingering back pain and participated in the small group sessions for quite a while but did encounter a flare-up fairly often when he did exercises that were programmed for the small group sessions. The workouts became more of a challenge to figure out which exercises would not irritate his back then providing a challenging functional workout.
I started the C.H.E.K. Academy roughly 2 years ago, and I have been learning all about postural awareness forward head posture, holistic health, and working around areas of pain. When I recognized that our small group programming was not very effective for Shawn I asked if he would be willing to try a different type of programming, based on the C.H.E.K. system, that would work around his back pain and remove exercises that would cause it to flare up.
Beverly: In your words when you were asked to try out the C.H.E.K. programming style to be created around your back issue but also around your love of mountain biking what were your thoughts?
Shawn: I had felt like I had exhausted just about every other resource, so I was definitely willing to give it a try but I was tempered with my expectations.
Beverly: You have now been consistently working out using a template that gives you 3 workouts a week with functional exercises, exercises that create stability in the hips and shoulders and focus on an overall stronger foundation. Can you comment on the differences that you have seen in everyday life and also in your outdoor activities?
Shawn: I am all but uninhabited. I mountain bike, hike & run fiercely, and compete with athletes half my age with no ill effects. I recently hiked up Mt. Laconte which is about 11.5 miles & 2,800’ elevation gain. In addition, I ran the entire way back down the mountain. It was very steep and technical. I’m not sure I could have ever done this in my life until now. I am amazed at how stable and strong I am in areas I previously was very vulnerable.
Beverly: If you knew someone was dealing with pain and was limited on their ability to get a challenging workout in, because of pain, what would you share with them?
Shawn: You have nothing to lose. Life is short and fleeting. Beverly is a rock star. She embodies not only the knowledge needed to help you, but she also embodies the skills to listen to your needs and create a personalized plan around your potentially complex physical challenges. Beverly is progressive and growth-minded which keeps her on the cutting edge of her holistic approach to health and wellness.
Beverly: And anything you would like to add about the CHEK system or training at B-Fit?
Shawn: The environment at B-fit is fun, enjoyable, and professional. The facility is impeccable. B-fit is a great way to connect with other like-minded people.
